3 Surprising Reasons You Should Look at the East Coast for Fulfillment Services

If you’re an ecommerce brand selling D2C (direct to consumer) products online and looking to use a 3PL (third party logistics) provider to outsource your logistics and fulfillment, we’ve got 3 reasons you should consider looking at the East Coast for ecommerce fulfillment.

Reason #1: You’re So Close to Your Ecommerce Target Market on the East Coast

Get this too, according to Thunderbit, here are some D2C statistics, 111 million Americans (~40% of population) buys via D2C channels, and the largest population of D2C segments is millennials.

Think of how many millennials tend to reside in more densely populated cities like Washington D.C., Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. This population tends to be the biggest buyers of D2C products online!

Reason #2: East Coast Ports Have Multiple High-Volume Ports, Not Just One Like on the West Coast

If you are a D2C ecommerce online brand and you receive containers of items often from overseas like China, Korea, Thailand, etc., you’ll want to consider how to send and transport containers from a port to your warehouse or 3PL warehouse.

Consider that the East Coast has multiple high-volume ports like New York, New Jersey, Savannah, Virginia, Charleston, and a port of New Orleans to come in the future. According to this article too, these ports serve over 30% of the U.S. population within a day’s drive.

On the West Coast, you’ve really only got LA and that port tends to get very congested.

Reason #3: So Many of Your D2C Customers Have Moved to the East Coast Since 2020

Pew Research sites that about 8% of Americans (26.5 million people) moved between March 2020 – 2021.

Some of the highest growing regions were on the East Coast, specifically in the Southeast including Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

People largely moved away from the West Coast due to lower costs of living, government and political changes, and the flexibility of remote work.
