R&S Logistics and R&S Warehousing Solutions are used interchangeably in this blog post. They are one and the same company!

It's hard to believe we're at the halfway point already. It's flown by. We've had such a great time getting to know the students, show them what we do, and get to see things through their eyes.

R&S Logistics recently partnered with The University of Tennessee Haslam College of Business as a part of their Global Supply Chain Institute, and we’ve been collaborating on a first-ever, never been done before 3PL class. It’s a short six week class held almost everyday of the week with both classroom sessions and in-person warehouse training on the floor. With it being a more unique & frequent class, we’re at the halfway point already and ready to recap thus far.

Supply Chain Classroom Learning So Far

The class has been led and taught by Associate Professor of Practice Don Maier, who holds extensive experience in the logistics and supply chain industry.

Additionally, we’ve had a number of our own team members talk thus far about managing and employing labor, how to manage operations across 12 + locations in East Tennessee, how to get customers, and why we pick our strategic locations.

Too, we’ve had experts come in and discuss LEAN management, 5S systems and processes, and waste reduction. This includes teaching from Evans Kariuki of Circle K Solutions and Lean 365 and Eric McCollom of Upscale Leadership

On the Warehouse Floor Learning So Far

It’s been fun to have UT students on the floor. So far, we’ve learned about warehouse layout, strategy, and typical operations of the KX1 warehouse. We’ve taught students too how to pick, pack, and ship orders, which was really fun.

We think this is such an important part of the learning process. We’ve watched students finally get why some things like data, order accuracy, and labeling (and more!) really matter when you can see the cause and effect of your actions right there in person.

Warehouse & Manufacturing Tours

One additional thing we’ve also included in this class are local manufacturing and warehouse tours. So far, we’ve been grateful to partners like Cherokee Distributing and Bush Bean’s for letting us tour their facilities and see their operations in action.

What We’ve Learned So Far

The students haven’t been the only ones learning. All of us — team members, subject matter experts, professors, and facility and warehouse members — have all been learning from this hands-on, experiential experience.

It’s really amazing too to see that no matter how long you’re in this industry, there’s always more to learn. The transportation and supply chain industry is constantly moving, so it’s constantly changing. That’s one thing that you can always count on!

🚚 The supply chain industry is always changing, so we always want to keep learning and stay on top of innovative trends.

This class is such a unique opportunity for us to do that for our team and our customers but also for the industry. It keeps us sharp, innovative, and creative for our customers!

“The reliability, flexibility, and professionalism of R&S make me know that I have a business partner I can rely on. It’s one less thing that I have to worry about.”
